Vote! Our Entry to the Rethink The Food Label Contest

This post is from Samantha Lefort (site / twitter), who’s recently joined Foodtree to work on our food label and personal interest matrix projects (among other things, of course).

At Foodtree we concern ourselves with food information and how to get it to your fingertips so that you can use it to make decisions. With that in mind, we’ve submitted a concept to the  Rethinking Food Labels contest just announced by News 21 in Berkeley California in partnership with GOOD Magazine.

Because when you know more, you eat better.

When Michelle Obama recently stated that she wanted to see “clear, consistent, front-of-the-package labels that give people the information they’ve been asking for, in a format that they understand”,  she meant it.  Food advocates and the food label industry has been abuzz with ideas around the subject ever since.

News 21 in Berkeley California, in a partnership with GOOD Magazine, quickly jumped on board and launch a crowd-sourcing effort to reinvent the food label. Their Rethinking The Food Label contest just entered its voting stage, and experts like Michael Pollan and Michael Jacobson have agreed act as judges.

Foodtree has submitted a solution here which is based on the intricacies and needs of each individual eater. It’s unique for everyone; giving you information based on what you’ve decided matters to you and your family. We feel that labeling needs to include the stats and facts that affect YOU…not the ones that food brands decide you should know.

Static labels are hard to understand and impersonal. No two people are the same, so why should our labels be?

Using dynamic and interactive food labels that offer us personalized information about food and how it affects us can be delivered right to the palm of our hands using today’s technologies. This Foodtree label concept, focused on your personal profile information, will deliver results tailored to your preferences. You have the information you want; everything from health information, to the date that it was first harvested, to farming practices, and whether it fits your flavour profile.

This label has the potential to include an endless list of insights that make your life easier. It makes it easy to know where your food came from, how processed it is, how it got there, and where you can find some nearby.

Making good decisions comes from having the best and most up-to-date information right at your fingertips, even more so when that information is tailored to you. Interactive food labeling is powerful and dynamic.

When you know more, you eat better.

Foodtree TV’s Hiatus & Contest Winner

First off, apologies to everyone for having not post a new episode of Foodtree TV for the past month. We’ve been busy putting together some data together for the city of Vancouver, continuing to build foodtree.com and generally trying to change the world.

As exciting as this makes things for us at Foodtree, Foodtree TV has been shelved for a while. We’re not sure yet when we’ll be publishing episodes regularly again but until then enjoy our archive of 119 episodes.

Secondly, we’re happy to announce that the winner of our last post’s contest is Claire!  Claire, we’ll hit you up with an email to get your contact info to mail you The Zero Mile Diet.

A Better Organic World – Contest for $5000!

Even though our team’s extremely busy with the Foodtree platform, we’re always conscious of the great things people and brands are doing for the food community around the world. A few weeks back we got involved with an ongoing contest from Soyaworld’s So Nice, an organic soy beverage found all over Canada and in many US states, so we wanted to make sure our blog readers knew about it and had the opportunity to enter and vote!

The “Better Organic World” contest is open and taking your submissions for ideas! Head to So Nice’s Facebook page and submit ideas on how you’d spend $5,000 towards a better organic world. It’s that simple. After that you can share your ideas on Facebook or Twitter to have friends and family vote for you.

At the end of the contest period, a handful of top entries will be assessed by a rockstar panel of judges which includes Lindsay Coulter, Elise Desaulniers, Raul Pacheco, Kate Trgovac, Celine MacKay, Valerie Lugonja.

Also of note:

On November 15 and December 15, the entries with the most votes have a chance to win one of the $100 vouchers. In addition, the top 10 most voted ideas, together with the top 10 picks of the Contest Sponsor, will be part of the shortlist for the independent judges to evaluate for the Grand Prize. Prize Winners & Twitter Followers

Two Friday’s ago, we asked our community to have a little fun with us.  It was spur of the moment…I felt like sending food to a few of the wonderful people who were following our twitter account.  I tweeted the following:

Without even mentioning a specific prize, in a few short hours our followers had retweeted and recommended us over and over.  We crossed the six hundred mark easily.  What I found most compelling was that it wasn’t a handout spree; the people who started following us all seemed (and continue to be) interested in food and our relationship with it. 

As promised, the next day I used a random follower tool (twitrand, if interested) to pick out two lucky winners from our community:

After all the fun I had, I’m wondering if we should make small food giveaways a regular thing?  We spend a lot of time here researching local food systems, and this could be a fun way to introduce you to the food being made near you.
