The Foodtree iPhone app Sneak Peek #vanfarmers

This past weekend the Foodtree team was out at the Trout Lake and Kitsilano Farmers Markets beta testing our soon-to-be-released iPhone app. We’re working with Steam Clock Software on this project, so you know it’s going to be good.

Here’s a sneak peak at what the app looks like. We think it’s pretty darn sexy.

It’s a photo-based app that allows users to photograph, share and map the fresh local food they find at farmers markets in the Lower Mainland.

If you’re interested in becoming a betatester, please sign up using this form.

The official launch of the app will be the weekend of July 2 & 3, when the foodtree team will be on site at both the Trout Lake and Kitsilano markets. Stay tuned for details.

Fun notes on today’s release!

Evolve with us.

As Foodtree evolves we keep pushing towards a day in which our comprehensive food database serves citizens what they’re hoping to know about their food, everywhere they want it delivered to them.

The database we’re building isn’t a matter of organizing a bunch of spreadsheets. It’s a database you have the opportunity to participate in, because our food system is a human one, and it’s constantly changing. Made by humans, moved by humans, and consumed by humans our food system is a social being, and so should be the database that enhances it.

Share and contribute.

Contributing to the Foodtree Community got a little easier today, as we release an update that simplifies the site a bit, gives you a better navigation bar and reminds you that if you’re searching for a food business near you, and you don’t find it, you can quickly add it to the community.

You can become a fan of your favorite producers and you can request that they stop by to share their story with us…things like where you can buy their products* and who the people behind their products are.

*Food businesses can also now put a Foodtree Where To Buy Map widget on their own websites, keeping this information up-to-date easily and in both places without any technical knowledge. We’ll even help them install it!

Reach.

For both members and food businesses, we’re now measuring your Reach, which is the number of food sources your profile is connected to. All of these measures will be used to give our community various benefits like awards, badges, coupons, and exclusive features. Start contributing now to get a head start!

Contribution stats…what we’re measuring.

We released contribution stats a while ago, and they’re becoming more important. We want to make it worth everyone’s while to contribute to Foodtree.

We’re now measuring a handful of stats related to contribution and participation. We’re tracking everything you add to Foodtree, everything you Fan, and everything you add to Personal Foodtrees.

We hope you like the update, and let us know how we can continue to make it a great place to contribute your knowledge about what you’re eating, and you relationship to your food system.  Got thoughts or questions? You can always find us on Twitter, or shoot an email to community@foodtree.com.

Mark Hyman, MD: How Eating at Home Can Save Your Life

The sustainability of our planet, our health, and our food supply are inextricably linked. The ecology of eating — the importance of what you put on your fork — has never been more critical to our survival as a nation or as a species. The earth will survive our self-destruction. But we may not.”

Mark Hyman, MD: How Eating at Home Can Save Your Life.

– This is why Foodtree exists- to connect consumers, producers and food. We’ve got a long, long way to go, but will empower people and food businesses to participate in a healthy, sustainable food system.

New Homepage & People’s Choice Winners!

Big week here at the Treehouse!

We’ve spent the last two weeks working hard on a new approach to our homepage, and we released the first version of that last night, in congress with Vancouver’s Launch Party 10 at the Canvas Lounge in Gastown. We were extremely flattered to win the People’s Choice Award, so thank you for everyone who voted for us!

The event was a blast, and I want to personally thank everyone who stopped by and took a walk through the new site. The compliments were overwhelming, and the questions were insightful and enlightening. I only hope my answers (and that of our team) were equally enlightening.

The Redesign

You can find out more on our What’s New page!

We’ve refined the experience on foodtree.com to deliver you a short list of restaurants in Vancouver which serve food from our farmers markets.

What’s that mean? It means you’ll see a list of places you can go grab a meal which are sourcing their ingredients from local farms…farms that participate in our farmers markets. We did the groundwork…we talked with the farmers themselves.

If you’d like your city to be next, let us know here!

Mobile

We’ve also launched a mobile version (pictured above) of the website which you’ll be sent to if you visit us from a mobile phone. It’s that same list, sorted by the restaurants that are closest to you. Pick one to eat at, and in one click you can call, reserve a table, or see it on a map.

Fan Local Farms & Restaurants

That’s right…now you can show your love for local producers and restaurants. We’ll let them know you’ve fanned them and their photo will show up in the sidebar of your profile!

More to come soon!
